From November 2005 Onwards... I thought I'd start add to this page now, and work my way backwards when I have more time.

1 year on…after my first operation
Yes it is one year ago today that I went under the knife and had a Tarsal Tunnel operation. I feel it is now a time to reflect back and recognise my achievements overcoming a messy outcome in the sense that I developed Neuropathic Pain / Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (what I think is Irritable Bowl Syndrome) spread neuropathy and a deformity with needed a second op to put right.
My current achievements are… I can now walk near to normal again (I am currently trying to use stick less, but needs much work) I use the wheelchair less, I can walk for longer distances than I could back in January 2006. I can now travel by public transport (sometimes, usually only one way…and need to get taxi home), I can walk to my local shops (usually only down as I live on a hill, and taxi back), I have cut out ALL medication (as of today, my choice but of course discussed with my Pain Specialist about safely weaning off…I guess we’ll have to see how that pans out as pain has increased again at the moment), I am able to be more sociable, I have attended a friends Jazz/Tap Night, 2 friends birthday parties, my old college summer show yesterday and today a football match, Arsenal v Barnet. These have all happened since May this year. I still experience flare ups of pain and limitations with mobility etc but I am currently on a new programme called ADAPT for CRPS set by my new Physio Duncan at St Thomas’ Hospital.I will give you a full update tomorrow, as I’m off to bed now…been a long day! Also, I now feel it’s time that I publicly give my account of what I went through after my operations so hopefully others will not have to go through the same, or if they do then they will recognise the signs in order to get help fast. I can’t help feeling that on that day, I went in for a body transplant…what with the medication too I felt trapped in a body that I did not recognise, had little control over which felt as good as ready for scrap. These things you cannot predict or prepare for.

Monday, well the pain has settled down. Not needed a Tramadol today. The receptionist at the dentist called to say my cap had arrived, I made an appointment for Friday because my Abscess should be cleared by then. The right side of my face still feels fairly numb but my speech is better. The Abscess must be on the move as the antibiotics kick in. It’s weird because, since taking the antibiotics… the burning, shooting, stabbing pain in my feet have gone! Only getting a warm left foot, crawling and cramps, but a definite improvement. One to mention to the team I guess! Sunday, the pain was really bad in my mouth. I slept on and off all day, felt dizzy, I could hardly move my head and I took the odd Tramadol as I did the day before. Highly drugged and the right side of my face slightly puffy, my bite was out as my gum was swollen too. My face became numb-er and numb-er as the day went on and no one could understand what I was saying as I sounded like I had a stroke. I think my fiancé was worried. I stayed in bed all day got quite snappy (excuse the pun) and ate very little, lucky mum had done mashed swede and cabbage with roast peppers, slithers of lamb etc for Sunday dinner which went down easy. At least it is diverting the pain away, from my feet!!!

Saturday, I was supposed to be getting my porcelain cap today to replace the temporary one I had been wearing for 2 weeks which originally replaced my mercury filling. Unfortunately… it never arrived from the makers, it was the first time that it had ever happened, my dentist told me (I trust him I’ve known him since I was little). Anyway, I kept my appointment because the past few days I had been experiencing problems with the tooth I had to have capped after my second operation (it broke on a diagonal line, unable to be filled the only option was to cap it. It was possible that the clamp from having 2 ops in a shot space of time, weakened my tooth.) Both teeth are molars, luckily. The capped tooth I had been having problems with (upper right) never really settled. It became sensitive to cold food/drinks so I bought sensitive toothpaste and continued flossing but the past few days I noticed my lymph gland in my neck swollen on the right side, then my right nostril became sensitive and bled, I had tingling, pins and needles and numbness in the face around my lips. The following day my gum felt itchy to the point of me wanting to just tear the tooth out with pliers. My dentist tapped on my tooth and I jumped! He said it was an Abscess and prescribed me Metronidazole tablets 400mg (antibiotics) to take 1, 3 times a day after food, for 5 days. He said that I should mention it to my consultants as it was odd, no decay and it was due to a swollen nerve… and TTS is swollen nerves too. There may be a link. My dentist said to call my pain specialist to check I can take the antibiotics with the pain medication I am already on. It was a Saturday, but I was lucky to have my pain specialists mobile number (which I do not like using as I do not want to bother anyone). I called the NHS help line first but they said someone should get back to me within 3 hours - being too late to fit my 3 a day pill in, so I called my pain specialist who was very polite and said I was no bother.

Well, I seem to be going through a patch where I am experiencing problems with my right knee. It started to click yesterday but it hurt when it done this and today I feel like it is buckling when I put my whole weight on my feet. I depend on my right leg as my guide as I cannot feel a thing (other than pain) on the sole of my left foot.

I have always found this song inspiring and I am a fan of Destiny's Child but after my operations, when I was in so much pain that was unable to be controlled and I had hit an all time low, I found myself singing the chorus of this song.
